U.S. News Media Group Ranks UC San Diego Among Best Graduate Schools
Graduate programs at the University of California, San Diego continue to be highly ranked as noted in America’s Best Graduate Schools, 2012 Edition released today by U.S. News Media Group, publishers of U.S. News & World Report. Each year, U.S. News ranks professional-school programs in business, education, engineering, law and medicine.
UC San Diego Inducts 2012 Cohort at Yale Bouchet Conference on Diversity in Graduate Education
On March 31, 2012, 10 graduate students across a variety of academic disciplines, were inducted into the Bouchet Graduate Honor Society at the 9th Annual Yale Bouchet Conference on Diversity in Graduate Education at Yale University. In addition to the induction, 4 UC San Diego graduate students presented their research: James G Williams from Music, Carolyn Chen from Music, Andro Rios from Chemistry/Biochemistry, and Kimberly Stiemke from Education Studies. Flights were provided through the generous sponsorship of Southwest Airlines.
Graduate Student Artists Throw Open Doors to Public at Open Studios Event
On April 7, Open Studios 2012 featured 46 artists and their studios in the Visual Arts Facility. Also showcased this year were a group exhibition and a graduate student conference, both called “New Institutions.” Open Studios is the largest showcase of graduate student artwork on campus and the benefits are made evident by the connections, exhibitions and art sales that have been realized as a result.
Graduate students take their research to the Capitol
On March 14, a delegation of 20 graduate students and deans traveled to Sacramento to give lawmakers a very different perspective: that of graduate student research as central not only to the future of the University of California, but to that of the state and the nation as well. Scripps Graduate, Ayana Johnson, Wins Sustainability Prize
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego graduate, along with fellow conservationist Tim McClanahan, is this year’s recipient of the global Solution Search prize sponsored by Rare, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ocean sustainability, in association with the National Geographic Society. Johnson won for her research creating a low-tech solution to reduce accidental trapping of untargeted fish known as bycatch while preserving the livelihoods of fishermen in the Caribbean.
